Dignity Drive

Incarcerated individuals often face numerous challenges, with access to basic hygiene products being one of the most pressing yet overlooked issues. Many inmates in Texas, particularly those who are indigent, struggle to obtain essential items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant. The "Dignity Drive: Essentials for Inmates" campaign aims to address this critical need by providing these fundamental hygiene products to those who cannot afford them.

According to a Texas Tribune report in July of 2023, "More than two-thirds of Texas’ 100 prisons don’t have air conditioning in most living areas. Every summer, thousands of officers and tens of thousands of prisoners work and live inside concrete and steel buildings without ventilation. While temperatures are routinely in the triple digits outside, the thermometer reading often rises even higher inside." ARTICLE HERE

A 2016 study by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Forward Together, and Research Action Design revealed that 34% of families go into debt to cover the costs associated with incarceration. This indicates that many families are financially strained, and are unable to provide regular financial assistance to their incarcerated loved ones.

We are partnering with the chaplains at five Texas prison units to place these essentials into the hands of needy inmates. Because of your amazing response we are now pledging $2000 worth of essentials for each unit over the next year. We are addressing a need in the spirit of James 2:16, "and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?"
